Volunteer for Festival in the Park
Are you ready? Maybe you’re already grooming your dog for “Best in Show” or concocting a recipe for the legendary Chili Cookoff. Or maybe you’ve never come to the DCNA Annual Picnic, which started as an end-of-summer hooplah headed by Marlien Paine, Barbara Radford and others. We resurrected this extravaganza last year, bringing back some of the old traditions and adding new ones – including the smash-hit juried Dog Show with categories like the “Master and Dog Look-Alike” contest.
We’ve set a date – Sunday, September 19th – and this year we’re gearing up with so many events and new energy that we’re now calling it the “Festival in the Park.” To make that happen, we need to convene a short meeting of everyone who’s volunteered to help so far, and anyone else from the community who wants to bring their creativity, ideas and special talents to this project.
This year we have a new coordinator, Meg Tally Hunt, who’s agreed to pull it all together. An experienced marketing consultant, Meg was a marketing/operations vice president for AT&T Wireless. The very active Carl Sandburg mom is very excited to apply her project management talents to pulling together this much anticipated neighborhood event.
So far, we’ve got:
• a confirmed date of Sunday, Sept. 19th, and a budget
• A tentative schedule of events—including live music, trail tours, arts and crafts workshops, a local art show, face painting and Wild Child portraits, chili cookoff, backyard wildlife information, and, of course, the second-annual dog show!
Please contact Meg at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to volunteer or learn more about a specific event.
If you want to keep this wonderful community event going, we’re hoping you’ll do your part....to put some Zest in this Fest!
Latest NewsWant to contribute to your local environment? If you have a little time and energy, and want to help continue to make your neighborhood and Finn Hill a terrific place to live and play, consider pitching in as a Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance Board of Directors member, committee member, or volunteer. Many people contribute dollars -- and thank you very much for the loyal support -- but sweat equity is also needed throughout the year. As a Board member, you play a direct role in defining what projects DCNA takes on. Two hour board meetings are held monthly and a few extra hours are spent each month on particular projects. Committees are dedicated to particular topics and require expertise or time to pursue committee assignments. For example, one committee is now working on identifying trails in the area. That work will lead to the development of trail signage and printed maps. Volunteers support the work of the Board and committees by pitching in once a work plan is established. For example, trail clean-up requires people to help pull ivy and clear debris a few times a year. Volunteers helped to stabilize a stream bank in 2009. Other volunteers pick up trash along the road or plant trees in the Juanita Woodlands. Volunteerism usually introduces you to fresh air and neighbors you may not have known. If you have an interest in taking part at any level, e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and let us know. Or contact any Board member. Contact information is contained in the DCNA newsletter or here at the web site at the DCNA Meet Our Team tab. We don't want anybody getting burned out so don't fear that any commitment will consume you! |
